Census Records

There are not many online databases available for Montgomery County that are free of charge. The 1880 census is the first census for the newly formed Montgomery County (1871) and is the only one I have been able to find.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY |
|
| 1880 Federal Census | |
This census is indexed and searchable through Everton Publisher's FamilySearch.org. I do have a CD for this census, so if you do find a family member in FamiilySearch's index and would like an image, please email me the information. The 1880 census is important as it is the first census to ask where the parents of each person listed was born. It was also the first census to ask what the relationship was to the head of the household which helps clear up confusion as to who everyone was. Keep in mind though when looking at children that the relationship listed is to the head of the household, so the mother listed in the census may not be the mother of all children. |

The next census that would have been available for Montgomery County would have been the 1890 census. However, there was a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on January 10, 1921. Only 1,233 pages (or pieces) of the records survived the fire. The only surviving census records are:

| 1900 Montgomery County Federal Census | |
I am still in the process of transcribing this census and hope to have it on-line and indexed soon. This census is important as it is the second available Montgomery County census. This census was the only one to list the birth month and year of every person in the household. It also lists the number of years married, total children and those living which will also give you many clues about whether a person has been married before, second wife, second husband, and very importantly if the children listed in the household are all the children of the wife shown. If you are researching an immigrant ancestor in this time period, you will be able to see the year of immigration and information about naturalization, making it easier to gather records about these individuals. |
|
Remember though, if you are researching people in Montgomery County prior to the date of the county's incorporation in 1871, you will want to look at Carroll and Choctaw counties prior to the first Montgomery County census in 1880 as these are the two counties from which Montgomery was formed. |

CARROLL COUNTY |
|
The Carroll County MSGenWeb site has the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census records indexed and online for researchers. This is a wonderful website and has a great deal of information for early researchers. |
CHOCTAW COUNTY |
|
The County Coordinator for Choctaw County does lookups for the 1840 and 1850 Choctaw County censuses. I have found the following censuses online: |

| 1860 Census - images are available at the USGenWeb Census project page. | |
OTHER CENSUS RECORD INFORMATION |
|
While there are no census records for Montgomery, Choctaw and only one (1840) for Carroll Counties in Mississippi, it has many other censuses available online for other counties in Mississippi as well as the United States.

|
| SK Publications | |
provides census books and CD's of images of the actual censuses. They do not have any available for Montgomery or Choctaw Counties, but do have the 1840 and 1850 Carroll County census books for $20 each or the 1840 and 1850 census on one CD for $20.
|
|
| All Census | |
has the 1880 Montgomery County Census on CD for $9.95. They have no Carroll County censuses available but do have the 1880 Choctaw County Census also for $9.95. If you have family in this area at that time it is a great resource for the money. This site also has some great links on things to look for in the old handwriting on the censuses as well as occupations of that time among other things.
